To Lose Weight - Be Yourself
"This diet plan has worked for thousands!" "Millions have lost weight with this machine!" "I lost the weight using this program you can too."
While there is wisdom in seeing what has worked for others, you also have to adapt any fitness program to your own personality, lifestyle and resources. For instance, every diet program around tells you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day because if you wait all that time from getting up in the morning until lunch you will be famished. It makes good sense. There's research to back it up. And it just doesn't work for me. Instead of helping me, it hurts. Here's why. I usually get up around 8:30-9:00 because my classes generally start about 10 and I tend to work late night when no one will call reading papers, recording grades, and managing my various web ministries. So, it works out best for me not to crawl under the covers at 11 and jump out of bed at 6. I wouldn't know what to do with the intervening 4 hours until classes start. But back to the story. I get up about 8:30-9:00 and my lunch break is at 11:00. Well, if I eat breakfast, I'm not hungry enough to have lunch so I just work through it, but about 2 p.m. when I have my next break I'm famished, but the cafeteria at school has closed their main kitchen and all that's left are high calorie deserts and I don't have time to go to the restaurant for lunch and the only other quick food is the McDonald's accross the street. So I either avoid the various junk foods and go without until 6 p.m. when I get home at which time I am ready to eat anything which gets in my way or I scarf down high calorie stuff I really don't want or need just to take the edge off the hunger.
In other words, what is good advice (advice I've even given to others) for 90 percent of us doesn't work for me. So, find things that fit your personality and lifestyle which work for you. Do you get snack attacks at night while watching a certain program, instead of trying to "tough it out and become miserable, work with them and eat something, but make it healthy like a piece of fruit instead of candy. Do you get bored stiff pedaling a stationary bike? Well, take a water aerobics class or use a stair stepping devise or take long brisk walks. Do something you can maintain. And if you start a diet or weight-loss regimen and it doesn't work for you, see if there is a way you can adapt it to your needs or find a new one. Better yet, learn some basic principles of fitness and create your own healthy living program. Make it yours and you will keep with the program. Live someone else's life and you will fail.
